Rob van Bavel from www.donlawrence.co.uk :-

DON LAWRENCE DIED On Monday 29th of December Don Lawrence died at the age of 75 in a hospital near his hometown Jevington. Surrounded by his family Don Lawrence passed away peacefully. Don suffered a long time of Lungemphysism. Parts of his lungs had died which caused him problems breathing. Recent complications from pneumonia made him pass away.

Just a few months ago Don Lawrence was the special guest at the famous Comic days, a huge comic festival in Holland. He enjoyed the warmth and love he got from his fans and colleagues. Many fans stood in line for over an hour at the stand were Don Lawrence was signing, to have a chat and to congratulate him with his upcoming 75th birthday. That was the greatest thing about Don. He always took time to have a chat and was interested in who you were and what you were doing. This made him the most beloved artist in Holland where his publisher's house was. His visit to the strip days worked as a huge motivator for Don. He hadn't been drawing for over a year but after the convention he phoned up his good friend and writer Martin Lodewijk with the idea to start working on a new script. This should happen secretly because Don didn't want to disappoint his fans.

The International Comic scene reacted shocked on the death of Don Lawrence. Especially the Dutch media reacted on his sudden death. The Dutch television news programmes used parts of a morning show in which a television crew had filmed at Don's studio in Jevington. Also the Don Lawrence Fan Club received a lot of e-mails with the condolences for Don's family and friends.

Don Lawrence was a great man and one of the best comic artists ever. We will miss him a lot.
